If you're not cranking up the blur to unrealistic heights and have a proper Z-Buffer (or a World Position Pass + Camera Data) then you could get very far with the free Depth Defocus Macro. In the past I was disappointed with the results but those were renders with either Octane and/or Redshift and I may not have found the sweet spots for these render engines regarding the Z Channel. I'm not sure if this is because I rendered through Mantra which may handle Pixel Samples better between RGBA and Z / World position channels. Both of which yielded better (and to be honest completely usable) results compared to my past tries. I have complained about the DoF effects in Fusion before and they are definitely not as good as Frischluft for example, but for some personal projects recently, I played a little more with the native Depth Blur and the Macro Depth Defocus. Working with different versions and generally loading and exporting is much easier/ more flexible through the standalone version. Not just because of the performance and crashes (which will surely be fixed in the future) but also workflow wise. Don't do it to yourself and do mild to heavy comp work through Resolve. Perhaps I'm overlooking something? I wanted to ask for any recommendations of any other tools/plugins/workarounds/resources or solutions anyone here has for creating decent DoF in Fusion.Īs Bryan recommended.

I'm pretty bummed that DoF seems to be one Achilles heel of this great software package. I've tried Lens Care OFX by Frischluft and their Depth of Field plugin crashes Resolve. When a client project must be rushed, I'd like to use Z Depth passes to create nice Depth of Field in Fusion to my animations.Īfter scouring the internet, I've only found a couple of short tutorials (very outdated) and after following along, the results are not too impressive. Lots of my render time is tied up in rendering with Depth of Field within my rendering software of choice. I recently purchased Studio and began using it for my NLE and a bit of color correction and titles for product animations I do for my clients. Fusion is regarded as one of the best compositing software available and I love that it has a bunch of other capabilities all baked into one piece of software.
